‘We made Costa Rica look like Brazil’: Furious Dietmar Hamann blasts Hansi Flick for Germany’s ‘PATHETIC’ showing at the World Cup and insists the manager MUST go after their shock group-stage exit
Dietmar Hamann believes Hansi Flick must go as Germany’s manager after their early exit from a second consecutive World Cup.
Germany fell short at the group stages despite a 4-2 win over Costa Rica, as Japan beat Spain, and their European rivals had a better goal difference owing to their earlier hammering of the CONCACAF squad.
Flick took on the role as German head coach last summer after Euro 2020, and despite their disappointing showing in Qatar, the 57-year-old has won support from players including Antonio Rudiger.

But the former Bayern Munich and Liverpool player, who made 59 appearances for Germany between 1997 and 2005, said Flick’s position was untenable.
As reported via iMiaSanMia on Twitter, Hamann told Sky Germany: ‘I think it’s impossible that we can continue with the coach. After this debacle we only have 18 months until the Euros at home, that was pathetic.
‘When I hear some comments from the people in charge, I have to say that has nothing to do with assuming responsibility. Excuses, excuses, excuses. It’s time for a cut.’

Germany were eliminated in the group stage in Russia four years ago, and they started this tournament off poorly as well, losing to Japan. While a draw against Spain left open a glimmer of hope for Flick’s side, it was not enough.
Germany fell 2-1 behind during their match with Costa Rica, a score which would have sent Spain out too, only for Flick’s side to come back and win through a brace by Kai Havertz.
Costa Rica had lost their opening game 7-0 to Spain, and overcame the dominance of Japan to earn a smash-and-grab victory by a single goal. Germany were expected to brush them aside easily, and this is something that Hamann believed highlighted why Flick must go.

‘Costa Rica had a shot on target in the first two games and we made them look like Brazil,’ Hamann said. ‘Everyone does what they want in the team. I see no reason why Flick should remain coach.’
As hosts of Euro 2024, Germany qualify automatically for the event that summer. Whether Flick can hold on to his role for another year and a half remains to be seen.
