Southgate, however, has a proven track record when it comes to tournament football having guided his nation to a World Cup semi-final in 2018 and the final at Euro 2020, where they only fell short on penalties against Italy.
But that hasn’t stopped a flurry of fans taking to social media to insist that Southgate has achieved all that he can with this current squad and it’s time to look at Potter, who helped minnows Brighton to an excellent ninth-place finish in the Premier League last season while playing fluent, attacking football.
One fan said: ‘Not gonna abuse Southgate and nobody else should IMO but I do think he’s taken us as far as he’s capable.
‘We have a genuine chance of success with the squad we have but the manager doesn’t match up does he let’s be real. Get Potter in.’

Southgate opted to rest key leaders Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice and Raheem Sterling
Despite sitting bottom of the group and needing a win to turn the tide, Southgate opted to rest key figures Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice and Raheem Sterling against the Hungarians.
