The Scotland national team showed their thanks to Marshall, tweeting ‘National hero. Forever.
‘David Marshall, the man who gave us an unforgettable moment in Belgrade as his penalty save took us to EURO 2020, has announced his retirement from international football. Thanks for everything, Marsh.’
The goalkeeper’s 20-year professional career has seen some memorable moments, both good and bad.

As a teenager at Celtic, Marshall kept a clean sheet in a famous 1-0 UEFA cup win over Barcelona. He kept another clean sheet in the second leg at the Nou Camp to knock the Spanish giants out, and saved a Ronaldinho penalty against them in the Champions League the next season.
In more recent history, Marshall was the victim of Patrik Schick’s spectacular longshot for the Czech Republic at Euro 2020. Marshall was forced to scramble helplessly into his own net as the ball sailed in from the halfway line.
He will now return to his native Scottish Premiership, a tournament he won with Celtic in 2004.
