And captain Cesar Azpilicueta was keeping a close eye on the famous trophy upon their return to the club’s training facilities in Cobham, Surrey.

The Spanish defender disembarked the team bus proudly cradling the weighty silver cup, and paraded throughout the grounds with it on his head, still wearing his medal from the final, before the entire squad gathered around the trophy for a photo.

Blues skipper Azpilicueta and striker Olivier Giroud had previously kept a very close eye on it after lifting it in Portugal at the weekend.

He and French striker Giroud kept it close at hand while they ate breakfast on Sunday morning, with Azpilicueta sat alongside it for his morning coffee and keeping it in the adjacent seat for the flight back to London.

The duo did have to part ways with the trophy momentarily as the cup was passed through an airport scanner on their way home.

The trophy, which was referred to as ‘special baggage’, was given the once-over before being returned to its rightful owners.

Azpilicueta said after the match: ‘That’s done, we are very happy, we will celebrate, we are champions of Europe again after nine years, second time in our history.

‘I’m pleased that I could get my hands on the trophy that I missed before. But that’s gone, we are part of the history of Chelsea and then we will go for the next challenge. ‘I was proud to lead the team out but I wanted to be prouder.

‘Of course to lift the trophy, to lead the team, this club, it’s amazing after nine years to get this chance and thank you to my whole team mates, for the staff, to make this moment possible is incredible. It was very emotional and of course I’m very happy.’
